Yeah, don't get me started on the actual philosophy. Of course, I'll get to that in a future post. This post was really just a simple observation on engineering design that grew a bit long.

It really started when I was talking with a colleague who just happens to be a breeder and he mentioned that he had a PeTA plant come to his property in the guise of a puppy buyer and started asking really detailed questions about the facilities, specifically if he had a quarantine/isolation kennel/room (some specific term of art)... a question more likely to come from a code inspector than a puppy buyer.

Anyway, the same night I happened to watch Ben Stein's movie on evolution which touched on Eugenics, Nazi experiments, and death camps, and a visit to a quarantine ward and the two concepts just meshed.

These two things are fundamentally the same engineered solution to the same issues of very specific control of groups of living beings. The Nazi philosophy isn't necessary for the comparison, it's simply the most widely known example. I could have gone further with comparisons to factory farming, or picked any of 100 different detention camps, prisons, or even zoos.

But, of course, I'd give up that wonderful bit of alliteration for the title.

The kennel system is even worse than that. Not only does it promote utopian nonsense, it will inbreed or select from only a few sires that meet that ideal. I don't know if the Nazis were into that, because when they conquered the Eastern lands, they collected any children they could find who had "Aryan" features (Lebensborn). If you were born with one drop of German blood, you were German, and if you looked like the ideal, you were an honorary German. In a kennel club system, if you aren't pure, you aren't anything.

I happen to think the whole idea of "pure German" is nonsense. The difference between a Pole and German is even more contrived than the differences between certain breeds of dogs. After all, before there were such things as Slavs and Teutons, there were Europeans marrying back and forth, with genes flowing in from the East. Considering that my ancestry is in what is now Poland, I wouldn't make any claims about my "pure Germanic blood."

But the breed clubs are even worse than the Nazis. Their eugenics would allow for some "crossbreeding." Lebensborn was based upon a "breeding back" principle that was developed to recreate the Tarpan and the Aurochs. Kennel clubs won't allow that at all. You have to stay in your registry and your studbook.
